I was wondering if I can check the advance weights behind the timing cover with out redoin the timing. I mark the plate and take it off, do I have to readjust the points or can i just take the plate off Also when I see the weights what am lookin for that might be a problem . The reason why i ask is that my idle goes up and then down when she warms up check cables and carb, intake some one suggested that the weights can be hanging up any help would be appreciated thanks

 

Just mark the plate slots so it goes back on as it came off Grab the wts (one at a time ) see if the holes in the wts over the pins are worn (sloppy ) if so replace check the springs (no rust ) I usually put anti- seize on the wts and the springs When setting pts make sure the fat lobe is close to .018 and the narrow lobe .018 If you're wandering how to get the fat lobe point opening just ask

 

do i have to set the points after I put the plate back in if i dont touch the points thanks

 

It only takes a small amount of time and you can verify if they are set correctly If you want to see the whole timing procedure let me know I just spelled it out on the shovelhead forums

 

You move the plate the point gap will change there's just enough slop most times you can't get around it . Just follow the timing procedure in the manual , doesn't take long and you'll be ahead of your regular maintenance anyway .

Would be a very good time for that stainless steel advance unit and a Dynya S ign. system . Cures a lot of shovelhead ignition problems

 

timing should be checked every now and again anyhow with these systems. A little wear on the part of the points that rubs on the points cam will change your timing some, and the points screws can come loose also, changing your points gap and timing. I'd check that they're tight and check your points gap/timing to ensure you're set for awhile.

 

once you pull the points plate you will need to set the gap. and set the timing
