Default How easy can it be to steal a Harley?

Reading yet another post about a stolen bike, I am wondering how easy it is to overcome 1)Immobilizer, 2) Locked ignition, 3) Locked steering tree, 4) Padlock through the rear brake rotor?

Given that there is only one thief (not four strong men and a pick-up truck), how long would it take to get through the defences? I wouldn't have a clue how to do it.

Most people don't lock their bikes. Since the key doesn't stay in the ignition, people either forget or just don't do it.

Other than that, its quite often a team. There's no getting past the fork lock and such out in the open for the average theif.

Of course, there is always the exception as well as the occasional manufactuing bug like the Kryptonite/bic pen fiasco.

2 guys and a skateboard can take a bike with the ignition locked, forks locked, and or disk lock.

Add a box truck with a lift gate, and they are gone in seconds.

4 guys, 2 8' pipes and a van again in seconds.

Park smart and have good insurance.

My friends just returned from Vegas two of 'em had their rides stolen overnight in a hotel. The bikes where secured with chains to eachother. The "funny part" is that those two bikes that they robbed were rentals, none of the other bikes were touched, hummmm... I wonder if there is a conection...

Regards.

Like with anything you own, it can be taken away from you easily (both legally and illegally). Locks of various types provide little if any deterent to the bad guys. I gave up carrying my chain/Master Lock Combo about two years after lugging it around the country with the bike. Now I just take all the reasonable precautions of parking in well lit areas, or outside my motel room door. I lock it with the ignition/fork lock, and walk away from it. It might be your Harley...But to everyone else...It's just a motorcycle.

Have good insurance. Preferably actual cost replacement if you own an older bike.

A friend of mines RK was stolen a few months ago while parked outside of Academy Sports. Ignition and steering locked. Turns out, part of the theft was caught on the stores parking lot cameras, but not well enough to find out who stole it. You could see in the video that a guy walks up to the bike looks it over, and then calls someone on his cell phone. A short time later, a truck pulls up, hands something to the 1st guy, then he hops on the RK and takes off. From what I understand, the view wasn't all that great on the camera due to some other vehicle's in the way.

Is it that easy to get a key for a HD?

Get the siren and pager for the alarm.

That way you can run out and confront the four guys with 8' sections of pipe...
