Something that pisses me off.

My 81 has an L bracket that holds down the battery, it appears that for 81 Harley did away with the rubber strap, i know because i have one but it does not go or mount on battery tray on this model.
The problem, my battery comes loose from the l bracket after only 50 miles or so, then the seat has to come out, i tighten the bracket, and we are good for another 50 miles.
I will desighn something, but i love to talk with the person that came up with the idea of doing away with the rubber strap on this model

 

79-84 should have same battery tray with rubber strap, aftermarket battery tray ?
Put some rubber mat under battery and between metal strap and battery... 1/8" mat will do trick :-)

 

I have rubber strap that i can use, but i dont see any way of putting it on this tray, it is stock and i do have rubber mat on it

 

On my 1980, i used thin cork gasket material under the battery, and a modified rubber bungee to hold it down.

 

i think i want to try what you say Mike, i was thinking a strap, there is not a lot of room

 

I had to use thin cork for the base as the thick ones interferred with the battery installation.

I cut off the hooks from the bungee and made it "custom length"; i punched holes for the zips and inserted a short piece of metal brake line as a bushing to prevent the rubber from being ripped. I used zip ties on the ends. I experimented with where to best attach it.

 

I do my best work when am pissed, so I got a chance to look at the bike today and the battery working itself loose problem, the I seen something chining above my head and it was the invention light on.
I drove to Home Depot and got 30 inch electrical tie wraps, heavy duty a packet of 10 was $4.50, I took one and wrap it around the bottom of the battery tray and clamp it at the top, you need to be careful, and you can easily over tighten the things.
I don’t know how is going to work, but the tie wrap is on there good, when I screw with the battery I just have to take it off, but I don’t think it will move and if it can be there secure for 10 times at $4.50 am ok with it
