This has probably been posted before somewhere but, I was unable to find it anywhere.

I am running the standard Dunlops on the front and back on my XL1200L. I replaced the rear tire at around 8000 miles, give or take. I am now at nearly 16K and have to replace the rear tire again. 7500-8000 miles seems rather low to me for a tire replacement.

Question: How many miles are you all getting out of your rear tires?

 

That's perfectly normal. You should get between 5-15,000 miles on a rear, and almost twice that on a front. Motorcycle tires have to provide so much more traction than car tires that they can't be made of hard rubber, and so don't last long.

I got about 4,000 miles on my rear tire on my FXD, but my Nightster is at 5,000 so far, and it still looks good.

 

I've been averaging right around 10K-12K at most out of my tires, and that's over about 75% of the tread width. I've never seen anything higher.....Not even with the stock Dunlops on with the harder compounds. I guess it's OK though since I get to run real twisties everday I ride since I live in WV. I guess the guys getting 15K and 20K out of the tires don't get to do the twisties as much.

 

I ride the bike to work everyday on flat streets, about 24 miles round trip. I expect the stop and go, as opposed to freeway, probably contributes to the extra wear as well. The wear is mostly in the middle with plenty of tread at the edges.

 

I got 6k miles out of my Iron 883 stock tire.

 

I have a stock 2006 XL883. The original tires are just short of 11,000 miles now. I had thought they had a lot more life in them. I took my tread depth gauge to work (at an HD dealership) and took a reading off a new stock rear tire and found it to be about 8/32".Then I measured my rear tire tread depth and got 4/32". I talked to one of our techs to see at what depth they suggest a tire change, and he said about 3/32". That corresponds to tires on the big freight hauling trucks (that I worked on for 24 years). I used to do Wa. State safety inspections (about an hour) and was licensed to do Canadian inspections also (about SIX HOURS LONG!!) for a US company that hauled into Canada. They also gave 3/32" as time to replace. And that is always measured at the worst spot on the tire.

I am hearing (at the HD XR1200 forum) that the radials on the XR1200 series are wearing out at, from a low (these guys are riding hard as hell) of 1000 miles , to about 4000 miles. Maybe 4500. That is with mostly the stock tires. So I am trying to get info on tire life on the new Superlow with it's radial tires. Haven't run into anyone yet that has wore out the tires on their Superlow yet.

I would guess I'll get about 13,000 on my tires on my XL.

I'm right at 4/32 on my rear. A little over 10k miles on it. The front has almost 14k and is looking like the weather is taking it's toll. Getting cracks down in the tread of the tire.

Does anyone have a pic of the warning bars on the stock dunlops? I'm not really sure what I'm looking for.

 

Depends on riding style and location. I have an 07 883 and ride mostly rural roads at 45 to 50 mph, not a lot of stopping and starting, just easy crusing for the most part. My original front tire had to be replaced at 8000mi due to cracking down the sidewall. Dunlap authorized a free replacement with mounting, and balance at a local Harley Dealer. That tire has 13,000 on it now, and the Rear tire is still original at 21,500+.

Most states 3/32nds is legal... but barely... Personally I run mine untill there is no more groove in the middle... ... On my Sportster xlc I averaged about 13.5k front and rear...

How old are these tires, for them to split and crack? Mine wouldn't even last one season before the would be wore out... lol

You'll see the ware indicators... they are within the groove center of tire and really just a raised rubber area within the goove...

Are you running the owners manual reccomended pressure ?
If your only 160-180 Lbs total IN GEAR and with all bike add on's thats ok. Maybe,,,,

Im at 5,000 and my front and rear are half done BUT
I am not getting the typical flatter center on the rear.
My carcus Is still a round profile very similar to new.
Why,,,How,,
I run 38 rear and 33.5 front In my Dunlops
I'm 225-230 Lbs In gear Including luggage rack and sissy bar.

I ride pretty hard and corner as fast as conditions alow.

If you got changed to 404's not 401,,,you will not wear as long.
