Filters and oil are a religious discussion.
I use Genuine OEM Toyota oil filters for a 22R motor, as found in, say, a 1986 Toyota Truck, 4 cylinder non-turbo. $5 and a top grade filter. And it's even black. I trust Toyota a lot more than I trust any other filter maker, but K&N is usually good stuff, as is Wix. I've been using filters for 22R motors for the past 80K miles, except for maybe 3 HD or "made for HD" aftermarket filters.
My Evo doesn't like synthetic oil. A lot of other people's bikes don't either. I stick with the Moco dino oil. My bike likes that fine. You do what you want, of course, but you're asking.

Yes; My 99 Softail Manual says it takes the same filter as the later Twin Cams. If you look on the Harley web site under filters, it says the same thing. It also says that you can run the later filter for older bikes as an upgrade. I have used both, but right now I am running the older filter that is listed for EVO's up through 98.
I am with the Dr. above. I run Castrol GTX 20-50 in my EVO. I ran Mobil-1 Vtwin 20-50 for a couple of thousand miles, and I liked it fine, but my base gaskets started to weep. I changed it back to dino, and it quit seeping. I have 30,000 miles on mine on the Castrol oil, and have no leaks. I have also run Harley dino with no problems.

I use K&N's on my bikes. The correct one for an Evo is a 170C. The Twin Cam takes the 171C. JP Cycles sells a private label filter with the nut on the end that I'm positive is just a repackaged K&N. I did an oil change yesterday on my FXR and was able to compare the K&N and JP Cycles filter and they are absolutely identical.
FWIW, I run Castrol 20-50 High Mileage in my Evo. It has a little more zinc in it than most other oils.

We had a lengthy debate about filters some while ago! Here it is, but there are also other threads worth a look through. You'll be pretty drained by the time you get through them all!

I could never figure out why Harley changed to the hi micron filter in the EVO's in 99. All of the EVO's up through 98 took the early standard micron filter. I do not think any thing in the engine had changed that much. That is why I am running the older EVO filter in my 99, although I did run the later one once without problems, and it should be alright, as that is what the 99's came out with.
