I loosened the nut on top and removed the pinch bolt on the side. I tapped on top of the nut with light hammer while holding a board on the nut. Maybe I just need to hit it harder. As far as the spring under the nut, it seems to turn very easy. Will there be a lot of tension on this spring?

Had to use a bit larger hammer and hit on the large nuts on top. There was a rust build up where the shock goes thru the tree holes. Before I re install the forks the holes will be thoroughly cleaned and a light film of anti sieze applied.
