Default blowing ignition fuse, won't start

2001 heritage softail, I started it up yesterday morning and backed it out of the garage, then realized I forgot something in the house, so turned it off. When I got back to start it up, it wouldn't start. Checked the fuses, and the ignition fuse was blown, put a new fuse in it, hit the start button and it instantly blew the ignition fuse. Put another new fuse in, same thing. Blew 4 or 5 fuses.

Any advice as to whats causing this? I have the service manual, I'd much rather figure this out on my own than taking it to the dealer at $70/hr labor

Thanks

A short

Trouble shoot it. Does it blow when you turn key to ignition or when you actually push the starter?

it blows when I actually push the start button, I tried it again just now, with the seat off and as soon as push the start button, you can see the fuse instantly blow

yes its got 18" ape hangers, but no work like that has been done on the bike in a long time. I did give it a very thororgh washing a few days ago,

think maybe something got wet? and thats causing it?

thank all of you for the advice so far, I'm going to check for any loose ground wires

The start button wires are "pinched" in the brake resevoir/lever clamps that go over your handlebar. Open them up and try it. You probably can fix the problem by grinding out the half-moon area where the lines go thru. Also, grind out the lower half of the swith mount halves.
