I'm wanting to duel disc my 2011 Fatboy Lo and was wondering if the FLH lowers will work with our upper fork tubes? I'm not sure what size axel the new bike has either but just wondering if anyones attempted this before.

 

A friend of mine just did the opposite. He used chrome fork lowers from a Softail.



The fender mounts are different. You'll have to put some spacers in to take up the difference...pretty simple. He had the opposite problem so he just made some new fender mounts out of stainless and polished them. You can see them in the pic.

 

What the hell is that where the headlight should be? ....

 

It's a headlight extension. I tried to talk him out of it...but you can see the fork lowers none-the-less.

 

Yup same things happen at the bar late at night......they never listen and then bow their heads with shame the next morn..........

 

Just switching the lowers won't work.

The Softail triple trees are 1/4" narrower than the FLH version. You need the wider trees to fit the extra brake rotor in.

I would guess the FLH triple trees might work on a Softail, but don't know for sure. And you'd need to switch front brake resevoirs from a 5/8 to 11/16 (dual disc) version, as well as the headlight tins or nacelle.

 

FLH trees will not work on a softail because they are trailing trees, instead you just need to get the right hub for the wheel to accommodate the extra rotor. Its a huge pricey pain in the *** to do this project. If more stopping power is your goal, look into larger rotors and a 6 piston caliper.

 

I think the only thing that makes it pricey is paying for the labor...It looks like you might be able to drill & tap the stock wheel to accomodate a rotor.

But I agree that a brake upgrade that is bike specific may be the best option unless you're like me and willing to work on it until you end up with what you want.

 

Well everything I've owned has had dual discs and all but the 80 wide glide stopped better. Seen the dual disc front end on I think it was a Fat Bob and thought here I go but the tubes are bigger and to many things I like would have to be changed. Guess I'll suck it up and go for bigger brake more piston caliper.
