I have a 00 sportster. When draining the oil I know you need to drain the oil tank but how about the crankcase does that need to be drain as well? In the Manuel it says no you don't and even the guys at the Harley says no but don't you want to get as much oil out as you can.

 

I'm probably wrong here, but when you remove the hose from the frame to drain the oil, does that not drain the crankcase too?

If you want to get all of the used oil out (about 24 ozs) you need to buy some type of scavageing system, or make one yourself. There is a thread here that discusses both:

You just need to drain the oil tank, that's the way it was designed and has been for decades. Always drain the oil when it's hot.

 

I drain the oil from the oil tank change filter. Add 20-50 Harley syn oil it took about almost 3 quarts put 4oz in filter went to start it up but it won't start. Crank it over twice as soon I left off the starter switch it backfired as a little smoke came out of the air filter. Took the air filter off took choked off crank it again it tryed to start but no luck and it backfired again. Only think I can think off is I put too much oil in it.

 

I am new to the bike world but I don't think the hose drains the crankcase. That's why there a bolt on the crankcase to drain the oil. I think

 

The bolt on the bottom is to drain the Primary oil. You may want to get a factory service manual. There is no crankcase drain plug, just the oil tank drain hose/plug. If you want to remove the oil that still in all the oil hoses/passages/return lines you need to scavange it. Look at the link I posted.

 

Dry sump. Most cars and imports are wet sump. Harley's are dry sump, hence the oil tank and not an oil pan. Touring and Dyna models are a little different, as they have an oil pan, but it is located such that it still is dry sump.

 

Our dry sump systems have essentially two oil pumps, one pumps oil through the engine the other called the scavenger pump pumps oil out of the engine back to reservoir. The sump isn't exactly dry, just mostly empty. It enables the mfr to set the engine lower in the chassis.
