Need to change it - primary cover to motor gasket isn't reuseable.

 

Sorry but it certainly is re-usable.

I've replaced 3 stators over the past 12 years and at 103,000 plus miles I still use the original primary cover gasket and have no leaks.

Certainly try the old one first before you waste a trip and $35...( Just remove the old one carefully so as not to rip it anywhere.)

I've have also heard of some reusing and some not. I think I'll start by trying to reuse. I guess worse case scenario would be to have to change primary fluid again and get a new gasket. I'm also putting a new clutch cable on, what about the gasket on the clutch cover?

 

Ive reused my clutch cover gasket once. but i found out they were only 6 bucks at the dealer.

 

You can always reuse a gasket that isn't damaged, but you run the risk it will leak. Something that plays a big part in my decisions on whether or not to reuse is how hard it is to replace. I've done jobs where the gasket would an hours long job to replace if it failed, and usually replaced it no matter the condition. How much fluid I'd lose changing the gasket again is a consideration; Synthetics ain't cheap. It may not even be a choice; if you haven't seen the condition of the old gasket yet, it may be obvious you can't reuse when the cover is removed.

 

My clutch actuation cover tore when I removed it and for the 2 days it took to get to the Dealer for a new one it dripped some tranny fluid.

I did reuse my cam cover gasket though too...

 

Reuse or don't reuse. It is really a question of your comfort level. Yes I have reused gaskets in the past, but I usually try and replace them when I can. If the bike needs quick fix and no gasket is available I would take the chance, but if I had a mod or service planned then I would not hesitate to buy a new gasket. I hate doing the same job twice as well as having oil leak and spray all over my bike.

 

Yeah what they said. Its worth a try i have also reused mine when i painted the primary cover.
