Ive seen alot of talk on here about compensator problems and would like to know what year models this applies to. I have a 2000 Ultra and my brother has an 06 EGC and we are wondering if we should be checking them. Also, we bought the bikes used and would like to know how to tell if we already have one or not. Sorry for the stupid questions?

 

The way I understand it, every year prior to 2011 they were using the inferior compensator. They started using the SE compensator in 2011.

 

Anything before 2007, in the Touring models at least, have no inherent problems with the compensator. Started in the 2007 models through the 2010 models. I believe 2011 went to the SE compensator. The ones on 2006 and earlier Touring are a different design that had no problems. Why H-D messed with the design and created a problem in 2007 is beyond me.

 

While I had my inner primary off to replace the transmission shifter arm I noticed that there was some wear on the compensator cover spring contact point. There didnt seem to be any spring in the spring and the rings inside the compensator cover are loose. Is this normal?

 

Trudge, it's junk if it rattles and has no spring tension.

Typically you will hear it rattle or knock when the engine is running. Also there will be a clunk at start up.

I've seen prices for compensator cover assemblies range from $27 at J&P (J&P Part: 601-366 ) to $130 at my local Harley dealer. They look like the same part just different prices. Hmmm Any suggestions?

 

Looks like a couple of J&P reviews felt the product worked fine.

Odd how inexpensive it is, but it seems to be the same part.

 

My compensator came apart this past weekend. 2006 Road Glide.
Actually, it is four ring plates kind of conical shaped placed back to back to provide compression when the slip cam pushes against it.

 

I just picked up my 2011 FLHTCU from the dealer. They had to replace the compensator. Bike had ~15k miles.

FWIW, I asked about the 2011+'s coming with the SE Comp and was told no they did not, if I wanted to go to the SE it was a different part #. So I don't know what to believe.

Update: I called them back and spoke to the tech. He says some of the 1st 2011's came out with the regular Comp, but when they replaced mine they installed the correct updated part, which is the SE Comp that he says is standard in 98% of 2011's and all touring since then.
