I use a nifty plastic trench that slides under the filter and catches the oil that drips when you change it on my touring bike.

It doesn't work on the softail. Makes a mess everytime.

Any ideas on what works for this????

Poke two holes in the filter and put tinfoil under it with a trench leading to the drain pan. Let it drain for a while and then pull the filter off. Not foolproof but it works well.

 

Take a 2 liter soda pop bottle and cut the bottom and one side out it so that it slides under the filter and the oil drains out the spout into a drain pan. Will see if I can find a picture to show it better.

Works pretty good, and is free.

 

Brake cleaner.

 

My 883 Custom makes a mess when I take the filter off, I use the insert that comes in the middle of a 30 pack and make it into a trench for the oil to drain into the pan. Works well.
