Default Harley Davidson Engines

In light of all the newbies I see around here. I thought this might clear things up:
Flathead 1909-1936
This is the motor that put Harlet on top of the motorcycle races in the twenties.

Knucklehead 1936-1947
Harley's first overhead valve V-Twin.

Panhead 1948-1965
Improved engine design with hydraulic lifters.

Shovelhead 1966-1983
The distinctive enclosed cylinder head sets it apart.

Evolution 1984-1999
The now famous AMF engine. Harley also went public during this time

Twincam 1999 - present
Harley's first twincam

Exclamation

I think you missed the F-head motors, with the Overhead intake and side Exhaust valves used during the teens and twenties. Look at J series H-D motors.

You may have confused the F-head with the with Flathead which is often called Side valve or L-head.

66-99 panhead bottoms with shovel tops
84 HD offered both evos and shovels
Flathead in the 30's, they had the side valves

I stand corrected.

I had a 1942 Flat Head "45" back in the 50's. If I remember right there were some "74" flat heads also. And, the flat head 45 was used in the servicar up into at least the late 60's I think.

Couple of more points....First HDs were F-heads; 1928 was the debut of the sidevalve; 1929 was the intro of the first 2 cam (twin cam) motor; 48 was the end of the UL/ULH sidevalves, but the 45s stayed in the game until 73? as a servicar for use as police utility bikes; AMF years were the majority of the shovel years until bought back by HD family in 1982.
