I have a 2010 Sportster, and I'm attempting to change the primary fluid on my own for the first time. The bike has just over 7,000 miles on it, but I just recently had it converted to a 1200 about a 1,000 miles ago, so since I am changing the engine oil, I also want to change the primary. I've drained the primary, and the manual says to remove the derby cover. However, it says to add 1 quart of primary oil in the chain inspection cover, and then put the derby cover back on. Well if the derby cover is off, isn't the oil just going to run out of it? I though you typically filled in the area where the derby cover goes, not in the little chain inspection area (at least from what I've read/seen online). Has this changed for newer Sportsters??

 

No need to remove the derby cover.....Just remove the chain inspection cover and add the one quart.

 

Thanks! I want to replace my derby cover as well, so I will have to remove it, but I'm glad to hear I can just put the cover back on and then fill it up through the little inspection cover

 

BUT.......if you want to inspect to be sure its at the correct level the derby cover has to be removed. Not to mention this is the time to adjust your clutch so it has to be off anyway.

 

With the derby cover off, adding 1 quart of oil won't come close to spilling over!

If you've drained the primary oil with the bike level, adding a quart is as close to perfect as you can get!

 

You need to have the bike in a straight up position not on the stand then the oil will not run out.

 

If you are replacing the derby cover anyways then adjust the clutch while your in there, but I always put the cover back on then add the fluid through the inspection cover. If I don't do a clutch adjustment then the derby cover stays on and I just fill through the inspection cover.
