This is probably the best post on setting your gains for your amp.

Depending on what speakers you are using test out the HPF or high pass filter on your amp. Some 6.5's can run on full pass and sound great. Others too much low end freqs will sound distorted and you will want to filter them out. Anywhere from the lowest setting of 40hz to about 80hz is good window for 6.5 speakers.
