Default does the 2 or 4 ohm matter once you add the amp

i have a 12 flhx
stock radio
like it
added 2 ohm Polk MM651 speakers..very nice
then
added Fosgate PBR 300x2 (mine is 187 watts RMS x 2 at 2 ohm per paperwork with amp)
WOW
had to keep lowering the Amp Gain after Test Rides
am set at 5 right now ..so far

my question is if I buy a set of 4 ohm speakers ( which the 300x2 will handle) ...because i will be replacing amp with a PBR300x4 (which only takes 4 ohm speakers)..do I run the risk of damaging the radio with the 4ohm speakers?

or is it after you add the amp ( with Speaker level high inputs NO RCAs) doesnt matter whether its 2 or 4 ohm??

Thanks

Once you add the amp, you use the speakers the amp can handle. The radio is out of the equation.

Ohms law needs studied on all long term installs to be easy on components.I can't remebr everything I knew from my short stint in the late 70s installing stereos .In this case the radio is out but there also is something involving multiples on the ohms-----------may the guy who responded can help you on this

09B29. are you replacing the 2 ohm speakers with 4 ohm in the fairing, then adding another pair of 4 ohm speakers in the rear or lowers and replacing the pbr300x2 with a pbr300x4?

If this is the case you're good to go with that setup.

As 3408pete stated, the radio is pretty much out of the equation at this point with an amplifier added as it's simply a signal source now and has no bearing on the speakers sitting behind the amplifier.

well eventually i will have 4 speakers...2 in fairing and 2 in lowers that will be on half the year...thats why i need the 4 channel amp ...so at the time i get the 300x4 i will probably replace my MM651s with a 4 ohm 6.5 inch set in fairing

If the amp is rated for the 4 ohm load in 4 channel, you're good to go. If you did a 2 ohm load speaker, it may play a little louder but would likely be driven into clipping sooner, especially if the amp isn't rated for it.

you don't want to do this for a number of reasons;

1.) shortens the life of an amplifier not specifically designed to handle a 2 ohm load
2.) heat, and lots of it
3.) without a doubt will drive the amp to clipping.

I would add another PBR 300X2 when the need arises,........not swap it for a 300X4 !!
