Default RKC Woody's fairing Alpine KTP-445u Amp install

So here is the current set-up

Sony DSX-S100 digital media player, I use a usb thumb drive for music.
max watts at 52wX4@4ohms
rms watts 17w per channel @ 4ohms
preout voltage 2volts
preout impedance 220ohms
volume 0-50

Polk audio DXi-525 5-1/4" speakers x 4
peak 135w, 45w rms, 4ohm

Not a bad little set up however it is definitely lacking at 60mph and above, run volume at least 35-38 before it starts to sound crappy.

Was originally going to use the PBR300x4 amp however it will not fit in the fairing, neither will the SS amps. Looking to keep amp in fairing so as not to have wiring all over the bike.
Then I saw mention of the Alpine ktp-445u being a good amp and something smaller than most everything else and made a mockup of the amp and started placing it in the fairing to see how and where it would fit.

Of course the only place it would go is on top of the radio, ok fine. however the splash door rolls up in it the spot where the amp will fit, found splash door lifts up and slides back which will work even though it won't be-able to slide all the way back as it should over the radio due to the amps position. it opens enough so one can open the radio face and slide out the usb tray that is inside, I believe that if one had a radio that used cd's it work still work fine.

Will be adding pictures of install.

As far as the connections from the radio to the amp, not sure if using the 2v preout would be the best choice as the amp says 0.2 - 4.0v for RCA inputs and speaker level input 0.5-10.0v. can't find any specs for the radio speaker level volts.

Picked up different radio splash door from a local boat dealer however the mounting holes are not in the same place as the original. If I just swapped out the splash covers the old holes for the original would be partially exposed and there wasn't enough material to rivet the new door onto, not good. so I cut the door mechanism out of the old door and kept the frame so to speak, then I was able to slide the new door and mount into the old frame. countersunk the rivets into the old frame so that the new frame and door would lay flat on the old frame, can just see the edges of the rivets but colored them black to blend in and not look to crappy.

Then I used screws to attach the new frame to the old frame making future removal easier then covered up the screws.

Now the radio is reinstalled with the amp sitting on top to check function of door, lifts up and goes back about an inch before bumping into the amp which is just about perfect.

The bright spot between the hole and the word alpine is the door.

And I still have room to install the white water shield and able to bolt the outer fairing cover on with no problems.
Will also have pics of amp connections and water install once I ready to button it up after testing.

Looks good. I've had a Woody's fairing in my '04 King for the past 4 years with the 4 ARC speakers and an Alpine digital head unit. Worked out good but like you I wanted a little more volume at highway speeds. Ditched the roll up door and went to a flip up door that did not retract into the fairing and found that I had plenty of room for the small plug and play Alpine unit.

The only drawback I found was that the amp sitting on top of my head unit made my FM reception horrible. Moving the antenna around inside the faring and trying to reposition the amp did little to help out. Removing the amp restored the FM reception again.

I'm sure there is some sort of filter I could have installed, but I changed out the head unit to a Kenwood and will be intalling an amp in my saddlebag this winter.

Hope your FM reception isn't affected.

I do have an antennae mounted as can be seen in the second pic on top the hump for the headlight nacelle, however I have never used it FM portion of my radio. Only use the usb thumb drive in the tray. 8 gigs of music goes a long way.

So got the amp hooked up using the RCA plugs and have temporary power for testing on the kitchen table, speaker output wires were long enough to reach the speaker so I just put connectors on the ends instead of splicing onto regular wires. All seemed great until about 30 minutes of testing and boom, popped a cap on one of speakers. However everything is working as it should with no lose of sound quality or extra heat, weird. Not sure if there will been any long term effects if I just left it there and cut out the old cap. Happened while playing gangum style featuring hyuna hahahahahaha. Have it still running now, amp is just barely warm to the touch, been running for at least an hour now.

Seems the fm reception is unaffected which is good, not that I use really. Had to run the gains for the front speakers at the 10 o'clock position and the rear at 1 o'clock, which has to due with the way the HU is set up. Sounds awesome and extremely loud, about half deef right now. Still need to do a little more tweaking after I put it back together and on the bike. I actually think that it wasn't a cap that blow but some kind of filter possibly for the tweeter.
