Ultima Aftermarket Starters Beware
Recently purchased an "Ultima Thunderfire" 1.75W Chrome starter for my 2009 Street Glide. I was previously warned by two Harley mechanics that I would be lucky if it lasted anywhere from 6 months to a year. I, unfortunately did not listen to them and take their advice. I installed it only to have the shaft fail on a start up after less than 4 months. The shaft broke in half (cheap friggin chinese metal) and fell into my primary compartment and took two teeth off my ring gear. Damage to inside the primary was in the $1000 range. So a warning, don't buy this aftermarket junk! Although the Canadian distributor is in Strathroy, Ontario, some 45 miles from where I'm at, he did put and new shaft in it and make the repair. I then tried to contact the Global distributor (Midwest Motorcycle Supply) head office in Utah, and didn't even get a response. I wanted to fins out who was going to compensate me for the 2 grand it cost me to have my Harley repaired. They, of course, will tell you they are a wholesaler and only deal with businesses. So my tough luck, the dealer I bought it off is closed and out of business. Anyone else had a similar situation. Lesson learned: Buy only OEM Harley parts! (Funny thing is the biggest aftermarket supplier, J&P Cycles does not even carry any Ultima products......hmmmmm wonder why that is?)
