Default Why is my Pilot so High?

Hey guys, new to the forum and thanks in advance for your input! So here's the deal:

Just bought a 1992 Sportster 1200. Screamin Eagle Air Kit, HD exhaust slip ons. I clean the carb and this is what i find. 68 Slow Jet/ 160 Main. It was running rich to say the least, had the mix screw backed out 3 full turns. If you pulled the choke out it would kill the engine right away. So I switched the slow to a 45. Now I had to put mix screw all the way in and have the choke on to even have it run for a few seconds before it cuts out. My guess is I'll need to split the difference to maybe 58 or so for slow jet. My main question is this, most guys i've read with similar mod's are running a jet in the high 40's at most. Is there something I need to check that would cause my bike to need a slow jet in the high 50's? It seems excessive to me. Thought I'd check before purchasing more jet sizes. Thanks.

It' still early. Try 45/48 pilot with 175/180 main.
You can use washers to space the needle up a couple mm's.

Pretty much what I used on my '90 FXR with S&S A/C and Thunderheader - #45 slow and #180 main with two washers under the jet needle. I recommend you check the carb-to-manifold and manifold-to-head seals - if those are sucking air your carb/motor will never run right. Hope you get it worked out.

intake gasket leaks u would need a bigger jet to make bike run they only cast bout 12dlrs for 3 new gaskets now you got a smaller jet there is not enough fuel and to much air to make bike run

I agree with the previous posts. Replace the intake manifold seals. That is your problem. YD
