Default SU Carb

G'day All.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience/pros or cons about using a SU carb on a 91 Evo?
I had one on my old Ironhead for yrs and found it to be a great carb for performance and reliability.

Cheers
Dave.

Default SU Rivera stage II on FLSTC 1340 (build 1996)

Hello Dave,
Some years ago, I had a FLSTC build in 1991. I mounted a SU carb together with a Crane cam on it. It worked very well! It even needed less fuel/mile!

For the moment, I have a FLSTC build in 1996. I mounted a SU carb, but not the Crane cam... and now, I drive 32 miles less than with the OEM parts!
I am thinking of installing the Crane cam "Fireball"; perhaps that will help. Beside this, everything is working fantastic! Good cold/hot start, smooth driving! I mounted also Paughco two-into-one headers and a "Flash Gordon" pipe.
One of these days, I shall post some pics.
Hope I helped you a little.
Greetz. James.

Dave, carbs have moved on a lot since your ironhead! Unless you're determined to be different the stock c/v carb on your bike will be just fine. Why do you ask about an SU? They haven't been in routine production for donkey's years. The brand was taken over in the 1980s by a small specialist firm here in the UK, to support the classic cars market.

I had one on both my Shovel and my 88' FLHT and wouldn't run any other carb. On the 88' it was way better than the Mikuni that it replaced. Most who come out against them have never ran them. Rivera has made many improvements to them over the years.

They are not a problematic carb, just different than some.
Once you get them dialed in they do run well, but nonetheless, not our real favorite here.
