Default S&S shorty E questions

i have a 1986 sportster with the s&s shorty e carb on it. When I got the bike it wasn't very well taken care of but now that I own it I have fixed something on it but I'm having a problem with the carb. The guy said he had rebuilt the carb which in fact he did not. It ran like crap so I rebuilt the carb and now it leaks gas out of the overflow hose every time it gets up to temp I then took it back apart and cleaned the float and needle and it still does it. Is there something I'm missing or do I need to replace something inside the carb? Any help would be great as this is my first Harley

Most likely the float level is set too high.

If I remember correctly, you can bend the tang on the float.

This is a pretty good article on rebuilding a Super E:
