Default cv rebuild

when rebuilding a cv carburetor, who do you listen to? some people say drill out the vacuum slide to 1/8 , others say 7/64 , some say don't touch it .what happens if you start out at 7/64 , then go to 1/8 , and it runs like crap? a new slide cost around $38.00 . when changing low speed jets , some say 45 , others say 46 , some say don't touch them . what gives? any one here with the correct info? i no all bikes and motors and add on's are all not the same. any input from anyone ?

I run a 46 slow and a 195 main. My slide is drilled to 7/64 and I run a Yost kit. The bike is a cammed 88" runs great and has got upper 40's mpg.

well this is what i did, i have a 1997 softail custom, 2" drag pipes with baffles, kuryakyn hypercharger air cleaner , (only like the looks of it , don't care if it does/does not add more HP) . i rebuilt the carb , put in a 180 main , 46 slow jet , drilled out the slide to 7/64, put on new intake manifold seals and carb seal, turned out ideal needle two turns. bike was coughing threw carb at idle and low speed before i did all the work to it, now it runs like a champ , no more coughing , good response , no black smoke coming out , . i took plugs out after about an hour ride , look ok , not sooty or not whiteish either , added new cables and choke cable . good to go . thats what worked for ME.

Each bike and it's individual set up is a little different, and each engine has it's own "personality" based on parts tolerances, mods, etc. Even two identical factory engines may have slight variations in torque, horse power, how they breath, etc.

To give a fixed jet size or air bleed size and say it works on all bikes would be bullshit and numbers should be considered a "guide line". Most people say "what works well for me" or "a good starting point is". I really don't see too many people posting "this will absolutely be the size you need". If they do, then stay away. Unless they have riden your bike, or dyno'd your bike, how do they know? This is where doing your homework (read, read, read) and the skill of tuning comes in.

How the bike performs, test runs, tweaking, how the plugs look, even what the power output is on a dyno ($$) is how you "tune" a bike.

We have an advantage in the fact that our bikes are older and now have a track record of experience from many who know what works, what is a waste of time, etc. I'm glad there are people on this forum who are willing to share their knowledge and experience. It has saved me a ton of money.

Bottom line, it is not a fixed science. Some of it is, but art, skill, and experience fall into play as well. YD
