Default Needle Shims

This is probably a dumb question, but I'm cleaning and rebuilding my Evo CV carburetor. When I took it apart, I noticed that there are shims for the needle (I assume they are shims). Which side do they go on? I'm assuming they go under the snap ring on the needle towards the pointy end? Like I said, it's probably a dumb question but I would like to do it right the first time. Any help appreciated!

You are right, they are to lift the needle in smaller increments than the slots in the needle allow.

While HD does not put any shims under the needle, it's common practice to add some if the bike is converted to stage one or other work. If it was running well before, I'd leave them in..

It didn't run bad but I wouldn't say that it ran to it's potential. It's a 99 Night Train and I was pretty sure that the carb had never been pulled apart until you said that about adding some to it. I have considered doing a Thunderslide kit but am going to search the forums and see what people's opinions are. Thanks to you both for the input.
