Default 98 FXDWG Jet settings

I have a 98 FXDWG it has long pipes (not sure the brand) and an S&S Teardrop on it thats the way it was when I bought it I have it apart right now to clean the carb and I've had it on one 70mi round trip ride before that and it seemed rich it was stong in the lower gear but when I was cruising there was no chance at passing and it seemed to pop a lot when shifting I figured mileage to be about 38 MPG and the plugs were wet/black when I checked them. since I have the carb apart I found a 45 pilot 180 main and washer under the needle and it appears the slide spring may have been cut (not forsure just my observation) Just curious as to what you guys think about that setup should I just reassemble the carb as cleaned and see how she runs? should I skip the washer? Should I go down 1 on the pilot jet? manual says factory was 42 pilot and 170 main?

Yeah, try it out again now that it is clean. Did you examine the diaphragm on the slide to make sure it didn't have any holes?

I kind like what this guy dose and going to try it myself. Maybe it will help you as well as he covers your carb also.

Thanks for the reply. I got some help from another forum I have the carb rebuilt already now and after the rebuild bike is a little lean and pops on acceleration but I have different pipes coming so I'm goin to wait on changing anything yet.

Lean on acceleration is probably the needle. It controls about 1/4 to 3/4 throttle. Add another shim under the needle and try again, or better yet get a N65C needle (doesn't need washers). They are a little hard to find at HD dealers these days (obsolete), but CV Performance has them:

Its an easy change and should take care of your problems.

The other possibility is that the accelerator pump is not working. Verify by observing a squirt of gas into the carb throat when you open the throttle.
