Default My xs650 david bird hardtail project

I picked up an 83 Heritage Special in Sept. I paid $550 for the bike and it was a non runner.

I replaced the ignition coil and cleaned the carbs and the bike fired up. My ignition switch is shot so for now this is my key.

This is my first build and I'm learning everything as I go. I have a few good friends who are helping me so I'm hoping to have the bike built by summer. I going to hardtail it with a 4 inch stretch and a 2 inch drop. I've ridden bmx for the past 25 years so pretty psyched on the David bird looptail that lowbrow sells. Kinda reminds me of the old Mongoose bikes. I ordered it 3 weeks ago so I should be just about done. I'm hoping to have the tail welded on by Thanksgiving.

Here are a few other pics of the tear down.

I made a homemade soda blaster. It worked ok..

Tank work

David Bird loop tail, 4 inch stretch and 2 inch drop.

Cutting and grinding!

Thats about where I stand right now. I have a fender ordered from Led Sled and a few other parts. I hope to have it running by spring.

WoW I built one of those in the 80s. Dont forget the 4 over front tubes, and a club foot kick stand.

Well were slowly making progress. We made the battery box.

I ordered tubing for the oilbag, tons of bungs, my ignition, throttle, bars, seat, hinge, springs, brass petcock, mandrel tubing, taillights and a few other things. We messed around with bike tonight and here are a few pics.
