Default Are fork lowers clear coated?

On an 06 SG? I want to polish my aluminum fork lowers but I did that years ago on another bike and found out they were clear coated. What a biatch it was to strip and polish. What is good for polishing aluminum now?

Yes, they are clear coated. Stripping the clear off is easy with aircraft stripper. It will bubble it right up. Then, you can use a scotchbrite pad to wipe the clear off.

When I polish them, I pull them off the bike and do it with a bench mounted buffer.

Sounds too much like work to me! I guess that's why people go for chrome. So what's the best way to just polish up the clear coat?

It's not that much work if you are gonna take the forks off anyway . It really doesn't take long to strip the clear and polish them....Maybe 3 hours.

You can really polish the clear. It is what it is. The aluminum underneath is what doesn't shine.

I did mine on the bike, just removed the front tire and sanded with scotch brite pads and 800-2000 WET sandpaper No chemicals I didnt want to take any chances, it took about half a day but well worth the time and effort. Frees cash up for other extras.

For as inexpensive as you can find chrome lowers you are much better buying them off ebay ect. The work to polish them the first time is not that difficult and will look good but the maintence gets old quick. Especially if you live anywhere that uses chemicals on the roads. I personally will not buy anything that is not powder coated or chromed if I can help it.
