This may not be the case if you have a newer Dyna. On my Bob, the stock rod wasn't threaded and it was attached using the ball and cup style joint. I planned on using the stock rod and when I found this out, I went out and made my own.

You will need to pick up the 5/16 X 24" bolts and cap nuts at a local hardware store.

You could sleeve this with an outer tube.

I made steering rods for our small dune buggy with large all-thread, which bent when we hit a large rock...sleeved it with tubing and made it 200% stronger.

Wouldn't ned that strong here so maybe even plastic could finish it off.

I bought the DK mid controls link for mine. And I have to say, for anybody thinking of getting one or making their own... DO IT. With 3500mi on my stock link after I took it off I checked it out, it actually had a tiny bit of play and I could see it failing. With the new heim joint and link I have to say it not only has smoother linkage travel but just shifting it feels much more solid, like it should. My heims don't flop around or push to one side when in use either.

You have to watch when painting and powder coating things like heim joints. They don't operate smoothly like the should, should you get paint on the bearing surface of the ball.

Thanks for the comments guys and gals if you're out there. I don't plan on painting the joints. I like the raw mechanical look of them. If I did paint, I would take a round sticker and place it over each side to keep paint out.
