I use a National Cycle Gladiator shield for longer road trips, it's small but it's adjustable in many different directions, it's just enough to take the wind off your chest, I don't think it looks to bad either. I'm changing bars this winter so it won't work with the new set up, I will be listing for sale shortly if your interested.

I own a Windvest, and a HD Compact Quick release. I can't stand either of them. The buffeting is absolutely terrible with either. I have a relatively long beard (3-4") and at anything over 20 MPH my beard flies up and slaps me on the cheeks and nose.
For 95% of the riding I do, I have no interest in a windshield. It just takes something away for me. But in the late fall/early spring when its cold, or for long trips I'd love to have a decent functioning shield. Not so much just to block the wind, but to block the inevitable rain storm somewhat. After getting caught in a couple downpours at Sturgis last year, I kept getting envious of the windshield on my wife's bike.
I think part of the issue with the Windvest for me was the angle I mount it on my bike. I don't have any angle adjustment between hitting the headlight and hitting the bars. Everybody else that runs the Windvest seems to love them. I had mine on for 5 miles and put it back in the box. If anyone wants to buy one, PM me...
I actually ordered a replacement recurve shield from Clearview Shields for my HD shield, but I accidently ordered the one for the Super Sport brackets instead of the Compact brackets that I have. I'm considering buying the Super Sport brackets instead of exchanging it for the correct shield, just because the shape of the Super Sport looks more promising. Its a little wider and more curved.
Not sure why I have so much issue with the buffeting and beard lift. Must just be a combination of the forward controls, front end lift and tank lift, and the bars I'm running.
