Default 100/90 front tire to 120/70

Hi guys,

I was about to order my new set of tires when I got stuck on this dilemma. I know many have done 110/90 fron tires. Super Glide Custom by the way. Currently have the stock wheels with stock 100/90 Michelin Scorcher and was about to look for the 110/90 Michelin Commander when I bumped with the 120/70z Scorcher to mess with my head.

Has anyone done this? Is it safe? Does it handle better? Can the tire pop out of the rim? Is it better? Am I crazy? Anything will help so just throw it at me

Greatly appreciated guys

I personally would do the 110 commander II if I were you, would handle better, and no need for a wider wheel, but I'm not sure a 120 would warrant a wider wheel to safely run.

I would think you would need a wider rim to be safe. 20mm is a little over 3/4" wider. Are you running a radial on the rear? If memory service me right it's not recommended to run a radial on the front without a radial on the rear.

Recommended rim width for a 120mm tire is 3.00. Your rim width is 2.15. I would be concerned about the bead being seated properly.

Actually the rim is 2.5 inch. But still too narrow for the 120. Should be okay with a 110 though.

You do need a 3" wide rim to run a 120. Here is mine!

100/90 = 3.94"/ 3.54"
110/90 = 4.33"/ 3.90" (.39" wider then the stock tire)
120/70 = 4.72"/ 3.31" (.78" wider then the stock tire)

IMO, I wouldn't suggest putting a tire 3/4 of an inch wider then stock on a stock rim.

ok... now i know what is said above is true... however, i ran a 120/19 v rod tire on my dyna the whole time i had a 19" wheel on there. well after my first tire change i should say. I loved how it tracked, gripped, and road. Never had an issue. Was I stretching the stock wheel for the tire, ya, was it a bitch to get on, ya, did it look cool and handle great, ya...

here are some pics. I did a fat bob fender lid so i wanted a wider tire to go with it

Ok guys, all your comments are well taken to suggestion. I'm going to be a bit conservative and go with the 110/19 instead of the 120/19 even though "JRK5892" did have them on.

One last question:

My stock rear tire is 160/70-17, Harley sells a Michelin Scorcher wide tire kit for my bike that's 180/60-17.

Can I do a 180/65-17, been Reading a recent fellow member post on how the Michelin commanders last more than most tires, and think its a good option.
By the way, they have both 110 front and 180 rear, meaning I can have both tires same Brand and reference.

The same comments made about the front tyre apply to the rear. Check the website of your preferred tyre brand for recommended rim width. I would add that some Harley owners routinely ignore such things, then tell us that everything is fine, but there is a good reason for recommending rim widths! A 120/70 tyre is significantly lower profile than a 100/90, which is why it needs a wider rim.

I would guess your rear rim is 4.5" wide, which may be fine for both those 180 tyres, but do check the Michelin website.
