5 or 6 metal square pieces would have me concerned. All I can add is I've changed transmission fluid on at least 4 different rides and never remember seeing that.
It could be an exhaust leak from installing new pipes. I would try and see if it's coming from there, some people put like a feater around the flange to see if it moves. It might be worth a try.
I had this issue shortly after my 107 install. Ticking in the top end turned out to be an exhaust leak. Pinned it down by taking a 2' length of tubing. With the bike running put one end of the tubing to your ear. Put the other end near the exhaust flanges and work your way around each flange. If you have a leak you will hear it and it will be immideatly obvious. Once I re-toured the flange nuts the ticking went away.
Sorry guys been a little busy to respond. I will be rechecking the torque on the exhaust bolts to make sure. I took it out this past week and its still there but it seems to be going away or I was just worrying to much.I will definitely keep you guys posted.
It sounds like your bike has been sitting for a while. Give it an oil change. Maybe a bit of water has built up in it as well. I had this happen to my 2010 Road Glide and it drove me crazy! I changed my oil to Amsoil and gave it a good fuel treatment and it went away.
