So if I have a manual and I scan and post the pages for all to view is that legal? Also, if those pages are posted and I download them is that legal? I have several old Harley and customizing books that I would love to share but I don't want to get hemmed up. Is it the same as music and movies?

If it has a copyright, then you cannot reproduce it without the permission of the author/publisher/owner, except for your own personal use as a backup copy.

Most all copyrights run for a long time even if they are out of print. If the Company that had the manual published is still in business, I wouldn't try it.

Yup. There's nothing more important for our esteemed governmental prosecution to do. So..look out...they will show up at your door at 2:00AM with 12 cops in riot gear, and battering rams. And they'll kick your copyrighting @ss.

So you are trying to say I am a criminal because I have posted pages of the HD owners manual on this forum? ......................I can't believe the MODS let that happen!

Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them.
One declares so many things to be a crime
that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws."

Everyone here has probably posted copyrighted materials at some point. I expect that unless you are doing it for profit (i.e. copying a service manual and selling the PDF online) no one is going to come knocking. At worst, you may get a copyright infringement letter demanding you cease and desist from some happy lawyer. I however, would avoid it.

But I'm too damn goody-two-shoes...
