Default driveline noise

11 Super Glide Custom 13000 miles---Recently I have noticed a noise that sounds as if it is coming from the primary case. This noise(rattle) shows up at about 60 in 6th gear. I know that 60 mph is on the low side to engage 6th but it can also show up in 5th when the engine is in the lower rpm. I try not to lug the engine but it does make the noise at light cruse.(only on a hot engine)
Any ideas would help,
Thanks, Jackie

You pretty much answered your own question. Stop lugging the motor. I don't even hit 5th until 55. You say you try not to lug it, but you are.
If you were to take the time to check it out, you would find you are also losing efficiency in your MPG. You should be cruising in the 2500 - 3000 RPM range for best efficiency of the motor. I would also guess that the bike will ride smoother in that range as well.

I never engage sixth gear below 70 mph. In fact, my bike seems happier in fifth at that speed. Am I doing any damage (besides perhaps fuel economy) by not upshifting?

Also, if you are using lower octane fuel you might be getting spark knock.
