Default Dyna Kickstart

Have any of you guys ever put a kickstart on a Dyna. I have a 1998 FXDS with drag pipes. I want to know if the 75 style kick arm will clear the pipes and what kit was used.

Why don't you buy a 1975? This topic comes up all of the time. If you want the nostalgia of a kick-start, buy an old bike. The money and fabrication required to make this work don't seem to make it worth it to me. If this is what you really want to do, get out there and do it. Then post pics and the process for all of the others that have contemplated this mod and have not followed through. Personally I think that a kick-start would be pretty cool, but I know (at least for me) that the novelty would wear off pretty quick. Good luck with whatever you decide.

J&P Cycles has a kickstart kit for 1987-2006 five speed transmissions and it states that the arm does not clear the stock exhaust. They do, however, refer you to another page that has offset arms that should provide clearance.

I have a 99 Wide Glide that I bought because my 74 Ironhead that is a kick only got real old, real quick. It's a great item to have and a great conversation piece, but it wears on your knee, your patience level and your pride when you wan to show off in a parking lot full of old timers and the thing just wont start or decides to give a hard return and send you over the bars in front of your scoot.
I agree with L0W R1D3R and say if your really want the nostalgia of the kicker, buy an older bike. If it's just to appear "cool", or whatever, I say just use that start button and be glad for modern technology.

I would love a kicker on my bike, I think they are cool as hell...probably because I've never had one, all of the old timers seem to groan whenever this comes up.

I don't ever want to see another kicker, much less start another, and my bum hips and knees agree wholeheartedly. Some people claim their grandad or dad taught them to cuss. Not me, it was a worn out kick only ironhead, that taught me the right words to say.

Hooray for technology.

The practicality is still missing though, you're not going to start a fuel injected, electronic ignition bike with a dead battery, with a kicker.
