6-speed hwy mpg into the wind
My question is what are you guys on dyna's with 6 speeds getting on the highway mpg wise on flat roads into the wind at 80-85mph without windshields/fairings? Also please specify 96 or 103.
I have looked at other threads/posts/forum/google searches can not find anything this specific. I know MPG greatly varies and am looking for this specifically. I have a XL1200N that (after putting on electra glide shocks) I really enjoy riding and avg 10k miles a year. I live in the Dallas area so any rides I want to take to get to scenery take me through long stretches of flat road with a lot of wind. With the $$$ it would take to make some of the changes I want for longer rides, it would cost about the same to move to a used dyna (probably fat bob). I have no chicken strip on my front tire, and maybe an inch on the rear hence the dilemma. I do not I do not want to turn this into a debate over model of bike, just looking for some information.

This does not help with your specific question but here goes. Just checked the fuel tracker on my Autoasist app, I started using the fuel tracker to track every fill up since they added it to the App in March which was 4685 miles ago. The miles varied from stop and go in town to 75-80 on highway trips etc...Over that time my avg is 43.38 mpg with $275.49 spent on fuel.
Bike is an 08 WG with a 96 stock engine/breather only addition was Rush slip ons. 270 lb rider 70% of the time other 30% was two up with wife at 130 lbs

Had a 1200 custom. In town, short (5 mi.) trips, I got about 35 mpg. It is the same on my 2013 Super Glide. The weight to power ratio is just about the same.
The best mileage I ever got on my sport was 43 mpg on back roads at 40 - 50 mph. The Sportster averaged 42 mpg on a 180 mile trip with interstate speeds between 75 and 85.
The Dyna, on a recent 450 mile trip, with interstate speeds of 75 to 85 mph, got 42 mpg one way and 39.5 coming back (the difference being more stops.)
I haven't been able to see a real difference in mpg. HOWEVER, the Dyna is a more comfortable ride (in town,) and much better on the interstate. Put 13" shocks and front suspension on that Dyna, and you can do everything you can on a Sportster. I prefer the lower center of gravity on the Dyna.

I have the rears already so that would be a step in the right direction (kept stock springs when I put the 13's on just in case). Can the dyna keep up in the twisty's? That is my biggest dilemma because that is where I have the most fun. There is no where around here to even ride with someone to see, so the only frame of reference I have is you guys on the forums who have done both. And the consensus I have found is the dyna can't keep up through the twisty's. I would feel bad riding someone else's the way I ride mine. A test ride on a new one won't be the same because of the mods needed as you mentioned (already looked).
