Default 02 Dyna Cam Chain?

I have my 2002 FXD for two years now and just recently heard about the cam chain tensioner issue so this fall I will pull the cover off and see what shape the tensioner is in.

The complication is that I am 67 and live on a pension so money is very TIGHT and this is probably my last bike - couldn't afford to replace it!

If I find the cam chain tensioners are worn, the cheapest alternative would be to just replace the shoes (about $100).

The next step up would be to put on a hydraulic tensioner kit, about $450.

The best alternative would seem to be to convert to S&S timing gear set, about $750.

I don't know what percentage of twin cam engines develop this problem and I don't know if the aftermarket shoes are any better than factory original?

The hydraulic tensioners are more money but I don't know if they have significantly better life expectancy?

Converting to timing gears seems to be the most reliable but the cost is also significant.

Experiences?

Thoughts?

How many miles on your bike, and how many miles do you ride in a year?
The Cyco tensioner replacement shoes would probably be your best bet.

There is 44,000 miles on it and I put on about 500 miles a year.

At 44k, they probably could stand to be replaced. However, 500 miles/yr isn't much. If they look even halfway serviceable, you could probably stretch them out while you plan and save. Personally, I would go the cheapest route unless your intent is to build up the bike as an heirloom.
