Default Primary cover/case. What is the difference?

Hello,

I am looking for a used primary cover/case for Dyna FXDB year 2014 with midcontrols. The catalog says:

OUTER COVER ASSEMBLY, w/ 34982-02A, mid control (black wrinkle)
Part no. 60758-06A

AND the ebay is full with ones with the code of 60761-06

both look the same.

Is there any difference?

I'd bet that's the casting number. The sellable part number changes depending color/finish.

The A designates an update, in this case I'd bet i has the oil windage tray for the new style comp. I searched the 60761-06 and it's not coming back to and active part. Probably the part number for the gray or polished one and the guy just had it powder coated.

06 and up are different than earlier models as they do not have an inspection window.

I looked thru Ronnie's Parts Finder and could not find the 60761-06 on any of the Dyna models in 06'. The 60758-06A was first used on a Street Bob in 2014, as craigffb pointed out, it is most likely do to the new comp being used once the 103" started being used in the Street Bob. Looking at eBay with the PN you provided, the primary cover looks exactly like the one on my 2010 Street Bob. If you have the updated comp on your ride, you could use the cover off of eBay, only you would have to add the oil deflector (PN-62700064) and its retaining clip (PN-12200065) with to the inside of the case (Instructions Here). I would imaging that the new case cover you looked up (60758-06A) has this oil deflector casted into the cover.

I'm 99% sure it's the unfinished casting number. Look inside any of your cast/forged parts (sliders, calipers, engine covers and cases, etc.). There will be a part number that does NOT correspond to the catalog number. It's not listed in the parts catalog because it's not available unfinished. We do the same thing where I work.

Interesting, we do something similar with the electronics, when at a PCB level compared to a populated board we use the same part number but just change the leading part letter from a B to an A.

Yep. At the manufacturing level there are non-sellable components, subassemblies, and part states that still need to be accounted for in work-in-process inventory, purchasing, engineering, etc. Very common practice. We have lots of cast, forged, and machined parts that require surface finishing/paint/coatings and secondary machining operations. In most cases, every step the part takes within that process carries a different part number...including the paint color.

When i pulled the chrome cover from mine to replace with a black one... they both had the same part number inside.

Very True...casting # vs "finished"#

But those casting# can change to with the revisions (notice the oil "concentater" webbing)... multiple posts in this thread need to meld together.
