What is the largerst tire I can put on a 3.00x16 rim? Would a 180 even fit?

RE: Widest tire I can put on my FXD
I've been running a 160 mm Metz on the back of my '04 FXD for a few thousand miles and over a year and no problems. You could put on a 180-16", but it won't fit the wheel properly and may have other problems. An 18" wheel with a lower profile tire will work, but on a stock rim, 160mm is about it. You can go to a chain or narrower belt as has been suggested, but again, that will involve more mods than just a tire change.

RE: Widest tire I can put on my FXD
I have a 2005 FXDCI with a stock rear tire size of 150.
I would like to go with the Metzler 160...BUT I don't know what they mean by "special fitment?"
Does anyone know what they mean by that?
Also in looking at the rear tire to fender clearance I noticed that the tire/wheel in not centered to the fender. Is this normanl?
There is less clearance on the left side???

Here is the reply I got:
"On pages of the fitment area we note that the 160/80-16 is a approved fitment for the 3.00 rim on many Harley applications as in (# designates special tire fitment on OE rim.) This note is shown to state that there is an exception of rim width for the bikes listed in the fitment area. That's it and thanks for asking more clearly."
So - I felt better about trying this after his reply, but I am much more confident it will work after reading several posts in this thread where others have done it. I was most worried about belt and fender issues.
I can't wait to get this done - trying to find the time. Put a Metzeler on the front last weekend - far superior ride to the Dunlop.

RE: Widest tire I can put on my FXD
the difference between a 150 and a 160 is less than 1/2" in width, hardly noticable ... going up to a 180 gains you a little over an 1" of width ... I'd be more interested to know if I could use say a Deuce wheel with the 180 on my Lowrider .. anyone have that set up??
