Would it be possible to convert an 2003 dyna to the smaller belt size that I see on some bikes now? other than a new rear pulley, what would I need? Anyone care to chime in on this idea?

Here's a 160/60ZR 18" on the back of my stock fendered '01 FXDXT...using a 4.25X18" rim...

Then it is not stock. That rim didn't come on that ride. Did it.

What is the largerst tire I can put on a 3.00x16 rim? Would a 180 even fit?

I've been running a 160 mm Metz on the back of my '04 FXD for a few thousand miles and over a year and no problems. You could put on a 180-16", but it won't fit the wheel properly and may have other problems. An 18" wheel with a lower profile tire will work, but on a stock rim, 160mm is about it. You can go to a chain or narrower belt as has been suggested, but again, that will involve more mods than just a tire change.

maybe a low profile tire is the answer ... the thing is, its only about an inch to go from a 160 to a 180, is it really worth the extra cost if I have to buy a new rim and change the belt, etc? I'm not so sure !

I have a 2005 FXDCI with a stock rear tire size of 150.
I would like to go with the Metzler 160...BUT I don't know what they mean by "special fitment?"
Does anyone know what they mean by that?

Also in looking at the rear tire to fender clearance I noticed that the tire/wheel in not centered to the fender. Is this normanl?
There is less clearance on the left side???

I went back and forth with Metzeler tech support via email on this issue. He kept telling me that everything I needed to know was in the documentation on the Metzeler website. My reply was that in one place it says a 3.5" wheel is required for the 160, in another place it talks about "special fitment" using the stock 3" wheel.

Here is the reply I got:

"On pages of the fitment area we note that the 160/80-16 is a approved fitment for the 3.00 rim on many Harley applications as in (# designates special tire fitment on OE rim.) This note is shown to state that there is an exception of rim width for the bikes listed in the fitment area. That's it and thanks for asking more clearly."

So - I felt better about trying this after his reply, but I am much more confident it will work after reading several posts in this thread where others have done it. I was most worried about belt and fender issues.

I can't wait to get this done - trying to find the time. Put a Metzeler on the front last weekend - far superior ride to the Dunlop.

the difference between a 150 and a 160 is less than 1/2" in width, hardly noticable ... going up to a 180 gains you a little over an 1" of width ... I'd be more interested to know if I could use say a Deuce wheel with the 180 on my Lowrider .. anyone have that set up??
