Default 03 WideGlide With A Charging Problem

Anybody who has run into this would sure appreciate some input. Battery is good, tested under load. Whenever I ride the battery discharges, obviously not being charged, that leaves the voltage regulator or the stator, I get that. How I find out which one is the problem I don't get, manual does not have troubleshooting section. Battery runs down when I'm riding and I don't know about it until I try to start. Thought it was bad battery, not so, checks out, fuses are fine.

wolfprint, go to do it yourself help forum on this site, go down to electrical charging system. this should get you in the ball park. a real quick indicator is to remove the primary chain inspection cover onyour primary case, if it smells really burnt in there your stator is cooked. then do the tests for confirmation. I'll send another test via e-mail.

i had the same problem last year it was the voltage regulator but i went through changing the battery and continued to ride it by the time i found out the regulator was bad and changed it out.
well tried to ride and still run battery dead come to find out when the regulator went bad and i changed the battery and continued to ride it caused the stator to burn up the secondary windings. lucky mine was still under warranty cause the repair bill was like 400 to replace the stator of witch i only had to pay 25 under the extended warranty plan. so you need to have the charing system checked to see what is not working.

Thanks for the update Critter I think you nailed it. Was it a couple of miles or a thousandbefore the stator went.

Thanks Senior, not looking forward to popping the primary, hoping I can get away with it being the regulator.

wolfprint, there is a small plate about center of your primary case with four screw heads, remove the screws, don,t forget which hole they came out of, pop the inspection plate off, a burnt smell will let you know if if your stator is fried. You don't have to take the primary case off for this check.

I have a 2003 Ultra Classic. I just replaced my battery for the second time in a year. The one that was removed was bulged out at one side which indicated that it got very hot. I hadn't charged it with any other kind of charger than a trickle charger. My Volt Meter has always read a bit high in my opinion at an idle, 14.5 to 15. Sometimes even higher. Do I have a charging issue?
