Default refinishing a motor...can it be done???

I am close to trading my bike, and I think most of it stems from my hate of the silver (dead body grey) finish of the motor.&nbsp\\; If I wanted to black it out, what are my options?&nbsp\\; I know I could hit it with flat black engine enamel rattle can, but is that worth the effort of pulling the motor and tranny out?&nbsp\\; How much work is that?&nbsp\\; Would I be better off powercoating?&nbsp\\; I don't want to break the motor apart, but Im pretty sure that I can't just throw the whole thing in the oven for coating.&nbsp\\; I have seen blacked out superglides in the bike mags, so how the hell did they do it?...and is it worth it?

Good question.
I'm wondering if the 09 FXDC will have a black engine.
All it needs IMHO.

I think you should just give your bike to me, and that will solve your problem. &nbsp\\;But seriously, I used to have a Superglide, and I felt the same way about the grey motor. Overall though your bike looks really sharp. Maybe if you added some chrome covers to the motor it would make it look better to you.

I just ordered the chrome motor package for mine. I like how the custom looks with the silver and chrome.

A friend of mine just had his Softail motor painted black over the winter.&nbsp\\; The guy that did it completly stripped the bike down to frame and motor, masked off the frame and painted the motor black.&nbsp\\; I was surprized how good it looks.&nbsp\\; The only way to PC would be to dissasemble the motor,&nbsp\\;it's alot of work, but if it was me that how I'd do it.&nbsp\\; But, than again I bought a bike with a black motor so I wouldn't have to.

your bike looks great.

i agree with fastjoe - 3 chrome covers and you're done.

i also agree that the silver does not look nearly as good as the black. i have the silver too.
enough already - just make them all black (fxd fxdb fxdf) or black and chrome ( fxdc fxdl fxdwg)

I'm interested in the whole stripping the tins/masking the frame deal to paint the motor.&nbsp\\; How long does engine enamel last though, and how durable is it?&nbsp\\; Also, can I paint the push rods, or do they have to be masked off?
