My 08 Dyna manual doesn't tell how to disassemble. Only removal. It says the shock is not serviceable and must be replaced as an assembly. [?]

Agreed. They look like they come apart to me also. I was just trying to see if the manual illustrated it. Sorry.

progressive sells a tool that allows you to compress the spring, and lift the clip that hold the upper and lower covers on..... you can use it for stock, 412s, 440s.... and a few others of a similar design.... it's very easy to use....you don't even have to put the shock in a vise or anything.... if you get it, it's pretty self explanatory how to use.... i had my 412s disassembled in less than 3 minutes...

You definitely have to exercise caution when compressing the spring. I had disassembled a set of shocks a few years back and slipped with the compression tool. HOLY crap that spring went flying...luckily away from me.

Default tool

You have to make two tools. One to clear the top eye but seat on the retainer, the second to to go around the bottom eye both like a pipe but with part removed so you can remove and pry up the retainer ring. Put in a press and you can guess the rest. easy after the first time.
