On my FXDF the inlet was small and sucking hot air right off the front exaust. I felt a big difference with a free flowing AC.
Paul, I seriously doubt that your inlet air temp changed that much from stock to 'free flowing'... especially when cruising down the highway, which is where you are going to get your benefit.
I just don't buy that the front pipe was heating the air up going into your stock air cleaner, enough to degrade performance.
Not meaning to dis you at all, but I've heard other folks say the same thing, and I think people say it as a function of repeating it once they've heard it, and not actually stepping back and looking at exactly what would be happening.
The only time I can see your scenario actually happening, is at idle.... maybe.... and well I for one, am not concerned about a higher performance idle

I have the same parts left over as painguy I went with the round highflow setup from a bagger and the HD cleaner kind of cheesy but It improved the performance in my mind.
I think the restrictive part of the original set up is the housing more so then the filter itself. The original housing has a small restrictive opening were the air enters.
OK but say the K&N replacement filter gives 2 horsepower... the whole intake system- tuner deal gives 5 horsepower. Is a few horsepower worth all that financial investment?
obviously subjective, but, I don't feel getting 2-3 extra HP is worth the money.
Now doing it for extra reasons like changing out to a new style intake for a more custom look...
Creekhed1,
I have the big sucker on my scoot, and as long as you remove the black plastic backing off of your stock cover, you can use it. I just prefer the look of the exposed filter on my 08.

Now if you want to change the look of you intake system, that's another story.

I believe K&N says there's no need to remap with their replacement filter because there really isn't much more air flow with the restrictive opening of the original filter housing. I would also suspect there would be greater gains over the whole power band then just at peak H.P./ TQ; especially on the higher end with an open element. Also I would get the open non restrictive element now because sooner or later bigger bores, heads & cams are going to come (the addiction of one mod will lead to another). So you will actually save some money as opposed to buying the K&N replacement filter, then having to buy a open element kit later on.
Thanks to the members of this board, I put on a SE backer plate, the K&N filter and the Willie G Skull insert. Left it open and it runs great and looks even better.

if anyone is getting rid of the stock aircleaner cover off of a street bob, i am looking for one if interested in parting with it for a reasonable price
Hey, all
Good thread. I have a 07 Dyna FXDC, and I want to go with the round air filter look as well. I'm not interested in dumping $$$ into a stage 1 at the moment. As I understand from the thread, I can take a round backing plate and fit it to my bike, add a round air filter, and viola.
If this is the case, where can I find a cheap round backing plate? HD has one that is chrome (mentioned above) for $50 bucks. Anyone know of one cheaper?
