when I purchased my car I talked them into giving me free oil changes for the life of my car.
But the Harley dealer wouldn't budge. I may trade up in a year to a bigger model so for now I have to have them do the check ups so it's on record but after that I plan to do it myself. My john deere takes more work to change the oil than my bike. (and thats easy)

I can take my truck in for service at a local indy shop and get a 6 QUART SYNTHETIC oil change, rotate my tires, top off ALL fluids AND vacuum my interior for $75.00

What makes a bike so much more expensive to service with HALF the oil?
competition and volume... the # of auto places and autos far outweighs the # of motorcycle service centers and motorcycles.

Default Dealer wanted $400 for service

Went to HD of NYC today for my 5000 mile service. When my sportster hit 1000 miles I took the bike in to HD of NYC for my first service which they claimed would be the "expensive" one since it was the first time and they wanted to make sure the bike had broken in properly and what not. It cost me $300. I figured it was the first time so I should do it at the dealer. Now 5000 miles later, I took my sportster back in for a service and was quoted $400 for a service. The guy at the service desk claimed that labor alone is $300+ since it's a 3 hour job. I had a pretty strong feeling I was about to get screwed if I signed the paper so I took my keys and walked out. Did I do the right thing? Or is $400 the going price for service on a Harley?

Took my bike in today for an overdue 5K service and the charge will be $300 parts/labor/oil. Seems a lot to me and if was just the fluids/filter would do it myself but I trust the mech I go to get checks and adjustments right so worth the extra cost to me.
