I didn't tell anyone to not buy, use, mount a D407 and I never said it would not fit, in fact I said it is probably a good tire.
All I said is, those of you who tell others that this tire is a dual compound or Multi tread tire are misleading them, according to Dunlop, then you take me to carpet for posting what I was told by Dunlop. On top of that, you don't even have the initiative to call or e-mail to verify what I posted, why?
I have provided the phone # call them and ask. I hope I am wrong.

cbz1200,
First, allow me to suggest you cool your language.
Second, you are right, the 170/60R/17 is not an MT tire, just got that confirmed today from Dunlop. False advertising is what it is.
Third, don't ever speak or write to me like that again. I might just take offense....

I read an interesting article the other day about tire date codes..( didn't save the link sorry).
It seems that some places sell tires as new that have been in wharehouses for many years.. Cars and Motorcycles. In there resaerch they found tires 12 years old ready to be sold as New, think major degredation of the rubber..
You can check a tires manufacturing date by the codes on the sidewall.
There is a series of number blocks, the last block is the date code.
ie. if the number is 419 the tire was made in the 41st week of 1999, if it is 4108 it was made in the 41st week of 2008.
Just something to keep in mind while tire shopping.

I don't hate you either, but I will repeat myself: you *speak* to me like that again, I will take offense. I've kept my language to you pretty civil...

Now then, to expound on what cbz1200 was wanting to get across... here is my message thread back and forth with Dunlop on this issue, y'all may find this interesting:
-----------------------
ME:
Comments :
I listened to comments made by others, as to whether or not the D407
170/60R/17 is truly a multi-tread/compound tire as you advertise? I have
folks telling me it is, and folks telling me it isn't. I bought my tire 2
weeks ago, and it has a build date of 1408. Since the MT didn't come out
till '09, does that mean my tire is not a multi-tread tech tire?
Thanks,
Rich

Dunlop customer service:
Rich,
Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your Dunlop motorcycle
tire questions. The Dunlop D407, in the size 170/60-17, is not
manufactured with the MT multi-tread technology.
======================================
ME:
So, why then is it advertised on your site as a multi-tread technology tire?
The 170/60R17 is advertised as a rear tire in your selection, and the paragraph exclaiming the virtues of the D407 say this:
"The new D407 tire is made for 2009 FL touring models, and the rear tires feature Dunlop’s advanced MT Multi-Tread technology."
The 170/60R70 is advertised in the "rear tire" section.
I bought this tire because of this claim. I'm not real happy right now. Nowhere on that page, does it make the disclaimer that the 170/60R70 is not multi-tread.
Now comes the test of your true colors, customer service.... what are you going to do?
======================================
Dunlop customer service:
Rich -
"The new D407 tire is made for 2009 FL touring models". The 170/60-17 size
doesn't fit any of the new '09 FL platform vehicles. Only the two new
sizes of 180/65-16 and 180/55-18 apply.
======================================
ME:
I ride a '08 Super Glide, (FXD series, not FL series ) and Harley advertises that this tire also comes stock on the '07-'08 FXDSE... in the 2009 HD Catalog. (page 779).
I did not install the tire on a model line it was not intended to go on.
Now back to the issue, because your response below did not sidestep it.
Don't get me wrong, I like the tire. It handles well, and rides fine.
Rich
======================================
Dunlop customer service:
You did, in fact, install the tire on a vehicle model line for which it is
not intended to go on. The vehicle was originally fitted with a
bias-belted rear tire model, not a radial.
======================================
ME:
Really.... and someone who is running bias ply tires, can't run radials?..... what?
Back to the subject... again....
Have you looked at your web site?
http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/tire...ire.asp?id=107
Where does it state that the 170/60R/17 is not a multi-tread tire? I'm looking at the website right now, and it does not state that. It does state ".....and the rear tires feature Dunlop’s advanced MT Multi-Tread technology." The 170/60R/17 is listed as a rear tire. You don't see a problem with this?
It really has nothing to do with what vehicle it is mounted on....
------------------------------
At this point I have asked for the persons first name, so that I can reference them accurately when I call Dunlop tomorrow.
Talk about trying to dodge the issue.....
