Default fork oil capacity

Changing out my fork oil to SE oil plus putting some e-z fill caps so I can add in oil without removing the tube caps when I change it again as my bike (2005) had the fork tube drain plugs in them. Anyway, when I drained the tubes only a little over 8 ozs came out of each tube. My service manual manual says 10.6 oz wet. Called the dealership and they said 10.6oz. SO I am wondering if the service manual is wrong (not sure where the dealer was looking for his info). Howver one guys list on here says for fork oil capacites for all years of bike says for a 2005 Dyna Superglide 9.2 wet and 10.2 dry.

So does anyone know for sure what the correct amount of fork oil is per tube for a 2005 FXD Superglide?

Thanks
Jeff

Ok looked in the service manual again. It says 10.6 ozs but does not say if this is wet or dry. I am starting to assume this is a dry amount. If this is true what would the wet amount be?

If the service manual gives you a measurement from the top of the tubes, just fill till you have that much in it, don't worry about the ounces.

Well I already have my new e-z fill caps on and took the bike off of the lift. So I was hoping to avoid taking the caps back off to measure down the tubes as I fill it up.

I think I am going to put in a little over 9oz back in and call it good unless someone else comes forward to tell me different.

I've got an 02 FXD and according to my service manual it's also 10.6 ozs. if the fork is left in the frame/on bike. When I changed my oil I used Belray 10W and used an even 11 ounces. The extra .4 ounces absorbed some off the compression better and hasn't hurt nothing after two riding seasons.

Default Fork oil

Easy fill caps? NOT GOOD. The fork oil capacity is fine as long as you don't put in to much oil. If you really want to get them right take them off bike with the springs removed hang then upside down until they are drained and then with tube vertical add 15wt fork oil to measured height add spring and cap.

The slight bit of difference between wet and dry won't make any difference.

With that said, the proper way is to determine the correct amount is to do a measurement from the top of the forks...it takes all the wet/dry issues out of the equation.

what was your procedure for draining the oil? The book saysyou have to drain push in and release the forks and drain again the process could take hours to complete. That is why they recommend stripping the forks guts'n all and rinsing with some sort of rubber safe dilution liquid. it is also why they they abolished the drain bolts, the slime and stuff wasn't getting drained out. er that and to sell you more parts of course! If you choose the long meathod you will freak at how much filings, debris and slime oozes out.

On my wide glide I pull the forks from the trees, loosen the 12mm seat pipe screw ( snap on sam12le is just for this) , then remove the upper cap and drain, then pull the spring, washer, and and spacer. If not going to replace seals then let the residual drain from bottom, remove seat pipe screw, replace copper washer and reinstall. Then fully compress tube into slider. Fill with oil. Wide glide is 2.74" from top fully compressed w/o spring. Use my fliud evacuator to extend down 2 3/4" and suck out what it can till level is at that depth, pump it 10 times, extend, reinstall other components, install cap, put through trees, set height from top tree, tighten pinch bolts, tq tube cap.
