Default Drillin' my fender

OK, pretty basic question, but since it my FENDER its freakin me out. I gotta drill holes in my fender to mount my turn signals. The plan is to back up the fender with something solid (block of wood?) and ping it with a sharp punch to dimple it so as to catch the drill bit. Then use the drill press to punch the hole.

Pretty simple right? Right??

Sounds like a plan. The only thing I might add is maybe put a piece of tape over the area you want to dril if you're worried about scratching the paint.

If you're using a drill press, why do you need the punch?

A drill with masking tape worked great for me. I used one of them titanium tapered drill bits.

Snap and a piece of wood between guard and tyre just in case.

I know what you're saying, but my bits weren't long enough to reach the tire. I used one of these bits below!! For the big hole I drilled I still had 2 inches before the bit would touch the tire and a 1/2 inch of bit left so plenty of room. If I was using a regular bit I would have used a piece of wood for the just in case slip through, but these tapered bits are so much nicer to work with and you don't have to change the bit if you estimate it to small, just keep drilling till you get the right size hole. It would take a special kind of someone to slip with one of these bits into the tire.

Oh and with this kind of bit there was no need to tap a hole because the tip was small enough to get started.
