For 06 owners pi$$ed about the new 96"
I, like most of you I'm sure, received my 07 P&A catalog and was looking through it tonight. I came to the SE section where they provide HP and TQ numbers for stock and upgraded engines.
Now if you're anything like me, you love your 06...but you have to admit...it probably irked you a little that a year after you buy your bike, HD decided to change their engine (for the bigger). I have to tell you. I thought sure that with all the changes to the dyna line for 06 that we wouldn't see any changes for a hellava long time...and beside for the new for 07 96" engines, there really aren't any major changes (or minor). But still....a new 96" motor was enough to bother me a little. Not enough for me to go back and trade my 06 WG...especially after all the upgrades I've done already. But damnit..those ba$tards...I swear they did it to me on purpose...just to pi$$ me off
Well...getting back to the SE section of the catalog. I noticed that according to HDs dyno tests, they're putting stock 96" peak HP at approx 67@5500 rpm, and peak TQ at approx 81 ft/lb@3000 rpm. This didn't mean too much to me until I checked the numbers for an 88" with an EFI stage 1 kit (which is what I'm currently running). Their numbers are as follows:
Peak HP = 70@5500 rpm...and peak TQ = 81 ft/lb@4000 rpm.
As you can see, the performance numbers of the new 96" twin cam vs. an 88" twin cam with a stage 1 kit are almost identical (almost...88 w/stage 1 gives higher peak HP, but it's peak TQ comes at a little higher rpm)
So the point is, if you're like me, and you got a little bumed when you saw that they upgraded to 96" for 07...you can always just upgrade to the stage 1...it's relatively inexpensive, and you'll have basically the same performance as a stock 96" (at least according to HD). That's enough to satisfy me....
and PLEASE..don't mention the fact that if you have an 07 and you spend the same 130 something dollars, you can upgrade to a 1584 stage 1 kit and get even more power [:'(]

yeah i saw that too, i felt a little better know that i dynoed at 77hp 77tq at the rear wheel. still a little upset about the bigger motor, but if it bothered me that much i'll just put the 95 in motor kit on.

Well,... That kinda supports what I was really thinking about how much power the new 96in makes. Considering, thats the only major difference between the 06 and 07 Dynas, I now feel pretty good. It dont really matter much to me anyway, I'm pleased with the power of mine, and when I'm done with all my chrome goodies it will then be time for a 98in kit.

RE: For 06 owners pi$$ed about the new 96"
I just bought my '06 Bob this week and I made a conscious decision to buy the '06. Better fuel efficiency (one reason I got back into bikes after 10 years) and that fact that the new motor for '07 made it easier for me to get a great price on my bike. What's more...I don't ride so hard that I'll ever miss the extra cubes. I'm happy as hell with my bike.
But I do understand your frustration and am sorry about your disappointment.

I'm not concerned one bit...I've got an '06 Dyna for God's sake!
Why would anyone cry when there are people who have to buy used bikes because they can't get a new one!? I'm sure they would be more than happy to have a 2006 bike.
I guess I just don't see a reason to get upset over an improvement to a newer model bike. Look at what Harley did to the 2005 Dyna owners...they are the ones who should be upset![:@]
