Default 2007 Wide Glide Oil Leak at Filter Mount

Hello,

Curious if anyone has experienced a similar issue, I find a small amount of oil leaks from the oil filter mount or oil filter mount bolts. I bought the bike new and have generally always noticed a small amount of oil appear around filter mount, but more recently I've noticed some very small drops on my garage floor after a ride. I can see that it's coming from the oil filter or oil filter mount bolts.

This is a 2007 Dyna Wide Glide with the Twin Cam 96 motor. I'm almost more curious as to the purpose of those bolts because it looks like the oil filter mount is a sold part of the crankcase.

I'm attaching two pictures.

My plan is to change the oil soon and see if I can see what exactly those bolts really do and possible torque them up a bit. I'm also going to ensure I'm not filling it up too much with oil, I only recently realized that midway on the dip stick is full for a cold engine.

I'd really appreciate any advice!

Thanks!
Seth.

Just curious...have you tried snugging those bolts up? Maybe they've worked themselves loose.

That or if they are tight may need a small bit of pipe dope.

That's definitely what I'm going to try when I change the oil next, which I need to do soon. Going to have to remove the rectifier to get to those oil filter mount bolts.

I'm hoping to see what they are really for, and maybe if there's a gasket or o-ring for them or something.

I think they are for an oil cooler. There should not be any o-rings or gaskets behind them. Just put a couple of wraps of teflon tape around them and reinstall.

im 99% sure those are just plugs and have nothing to do with mounting the filter housing. are you sure its not just residue from an oil change? I find it doubtful both would leak at once. Clean with a degreaser and toothbrush, then take it for a ride.

teflon tape is a no-no.
deff go with the pipe dope.
after almost 4 years things break down and oil is prob coming out by the threads.

just an FYI @ the dealer I use new 0-rings and put pipe dope on every drain plug EVERYTIME I do a service.

Just a note for anyone who is reading this as I did... The two plugs front of where the filter mounts are pipe plugs... Held in but not sealed with Loctite. So I pulled them, cleaned off the residue Loctite and used blue silicone to seal them...

Now, no little puddles of oil under the motor...

Hi Karl, I have a question. If I unscrew the lower bolt you think it will let out a lot of oil. My fatboy is leaking from the filter housings lower bolt.
Thanks Ladi
