Default carb farts

Hey I need some input here, my buddy brought me his 95 FXD he picked up 'cause it was leaking oil on top,he thought it was head gaskets. I put new rocker box gaskets in, no more leaks, but when I rode it for a test, it occasionally backfires through the carb. As far as I can tell the bike is all stock, and only has 16,000 mi. Plugs were really light colored, but the exhaust is black inside. When I called him he said oh yeah it's been doing that all along. Tomorrow I'll check for intake and vacuum leaks, I pulled the carb and cleaned it, anything else? I also put new plugs, stock ones for the bike

Evo's come directly from the factory with carb farts already installed (LOL). If its bone stock and its just an occasional thing thats perhaps a little worse when its really cold, then its nothing to worry about. If its worse than that, once you get it running and warmed up, spray the manifold where it bolts to the heads and check for leaks there. Thats were they most often occur. If it gets to the point it HAS to be corrected, switch to a Sportster needle and shim it up or maybe a thunder slide. Re jetting up to a 45 or 46 slow jet might also be a worth trying (42 is stock I think?????).

I forgot to mention it because you mentioned you already had the carb off the bike, but did you already drill out the plug to allow you to get to the mixture screw? Backing that mixture screw out to between 3 and 3 1/2 turns can often really help on an otherwise bone stock setup.

My 04 Low Rider does it when cold, just have to play with the enricher till it warms up. I asked the tech at the Harley shop about it and he said "the answer is fuel injection". Ill keep the farts. Actually its not so bad,I fart when first started too.

The plug hasn't been drilled, I checked the intake gaskets and checked for vacuum leaks, then ran out of time, if I have to I'll pull the carb again and set the mixture, but that's tomorrow. Thanks again
