Default Check your vent tube occasionally!

Ran into this issue yesterday on my 10 wide glide. Its been 100+ for a good while here in TX I left work tuesday and heard the gas tank hissing on my bike it was hot out so I didnt think much of it, I let the cap loose and it let all the pressure off tightened back up and went on my way home really didnt give it any more thought

Last night after work I saw a bunch of crud all over my bike. All over the fork tubes exhaust, motor you name it... it was thick, looked like oil and had a strong stink to it. well after going over the entire bike looking for oil leaks I found the problem, the damn vent tube for the gas tank was stopped up and the line had collected enough fluid in it that it started spraying out of the check valve while the bike was sitting in the sun.

Apparently gas vapor will collect and looks like oil! I just washed the damn thing too! SO if you hear your tank hissing check the tube, hopefully theres no damage to my bike I can only imagine how corrosive concentrated gasoline is!

Where is the vent tube located. I thought the gas cap allowed it to vent without having a tube.

Its on the left hand side of the neck, theres a little cylinder looking plastic check valve with a hose running in and out of it. Its zip tied to the frame. Correct me if I'm wrong but the caps on EFI bikes are not vented, so they use the tube. My bike sat for about a month, No doubt about it some critter got into the vent and clogged it up. Insects and what not.

My QD fuel hose started spraying gas. It ended up really staining and etching the electrical box cover.

I sat down today with some polishing compound and after a few applications and wipe downs, I finally got it to look good again. I followed it up with a good coat of wax.

I normally catch gas spills before they can do any damage, but they can and will cause paint etching that is hard to remove.
