Default Carb troubles..

Hello all, fairly new here. Just made the jump from a Sportster to a Dyna. I have noticed that when I ride for more than 20-30 minutes, my bike (2005 Dyna SuperGlide, 88ci) gets a rough idle, and coughs and sputters, and sometimes just dies at a stop. If I notice it start to stumble, I give it a bump on the throttle and it has popped out the carb on occasion. I just pulled the carb off today, and the jets are 195 and 45. It has an Arlen Ness air filter (not sure which one, just a round element and Arlen Ness backingplate, stock "football" AC cover), and the pipes appear to be stock, along with the mufflers, too, although thet are pretty loud. I shined a light up in them, and the baffles are still there, though. I'm stumped....

try richening up your idle adjustment a bit. if your getting popping out the air cleaner its running lean.. too much popping in the exhaust and its rich . hope you get it figured out.

Have you checked for intake leaks at the manifold gaskets?

+1 check for leaks before making any other adjustments.

Pulled the plugs and the straps are whitish, with the front cylinder being the worse of the two. I will buy new intake seals monday, just in case...

The stock carb was tuned lean for the EPA, the A/N air filter leaned it out more. If your carb is still stock remove the aluminum plug covering the idle mixture screw and dial the screw out 2 turns out from lightly seated. Also the rpm at idle and operating temp should be 1000+/- 50 rpm.

My 2002 carbed 88ci has S&S air cleaner with Big Shots, also have a dynojet kit installed, jets are 42 and 185 and bike runs like a champ, sounds like your carb to manifold rubber seal maybe leaking and making for a lean mixture, a 195 jet seems a little large for your set up.just my thoughts

cheers

pilot stock is 45 and main is 190 , id jump pilot to a 46 or 48 and turn airfuel out 2 turns , shim needle .05 and if you have carb off id change intake gaskets just because im already there . big sucker air cleaner pulls alot more air than stock
